First of all, I wanted to thank you for all of the time and effort you've put into writing your book and sharing your success methodologies with others who are in need. I purchased your book last week, while I was already in the middle of a successful 3-day juice fast. I became aware of your story and research around this same time, and the success you had been having with fasting seemed to coincide perfectly with my experiences. For a little background, I was diagnosed with monoarticular JRA (right knee) at the age of 12, and had flares on an annual basis up until about age 17. At that point, I had been on Methotrexate and Celebrex for some time, and although the disease had spread to my right elbow and right ankle, major flares went away (barring some minor inflammation here and there) for about 8 years. This past February (age 25), I started having symptoms in my left knee including a ruptured baker's cyst and this slowly evolved into a series of flares that I've been having since about April. In late May, I completed a five day fast which seemed to help me for about a month. Starting in early July, however, the flare returned and I've been on Prednisone ~10mg ever since.
I had given up on the idea of fasting and diet, until the past few weeks when upon doing more research I decided to give it another shot. I eliminated all animal products (including dairy) and gluten from my diet for a week; this allowed me to stop my NSAID use but I was still on the Prednisone. A week into the diet, I began a 3-day juice fast and officially began my detailed food diary. Upon the first day of the juice fast, the results were remarkable. It was like someone had taken a vacuum and sucked all of the inflammation out of my joints (I should also note I am seronegative and my condition to this point has not led to any pain or joint damage whatsoever - only inflammation).
After the fast, I began tapering down to 8mg prednisone and felt fine the whole weekend as I reintroduced foods one day at a time. Yesterday (Monday August 9th) morning, I experienced a rapid swelling which I am still now battling, despite having gone back on a juice fast. This time, however, the fast doesn't seem to be helping as much. I'm about 30 hours in and the inflammation hasn't subsided at all - in fact, it has increased. On Sunday I had about two handfuls of walnuts, some almonds and an avocado (in addition to some leafy greens I had previously cleared as being safe). Also, I should note that Saturday night I drank about three glasses of red wine - I know that this is frowned upon when attempting to heal a leaky gut, but I risked it anyway.
In your book, you had mentioned that food hypersensitivities can occur when reintroducing foods, and I most likely had been reintroducing foods too quickly. I was wondering if you had any further insight into the role of alcohol in exacerbating flares, or whether almonds/walnuts/avocado could be a possible trigger. Also, in your experiences using fasting to combat inflammation, did you ever experience times when it was not as effective as others? The variability in my condition is very frustrating and confusing; last week I thought I had discovered an incredible tool at my disposal (juice fasting) and this week it doesn't seem to be working at all.
