Hello-My name is Claudia and I reside in Canada and have purchased Barbara's book and have learned much valuable information - but foremost it was such a relief to read the story of another individual with a similar disease, and how she came through it, with much trial and error and with such grace.  The book is an inspiration to me - I have had Reiter's syndrome (Reactive arthritis) diagnosed when I was in my early forties -it started out with my left knee, and proceeded on to iritis, and other various joints - unfortunately this past early August I fell and injured my ankles and reactive arthritis set in a short while later - I have been bed-bound for 2 1/2 months, with visits to doctors, falling through the cracks, ending up in Emerg in a larger hospital in the city with a blood transfusion (I was reluctant to try Arthrotec because I have a sensitivity to NSAID's but the doctor informed me it was "coated") - five days later I was in extreme nausea and found out a week after that I was anemic and to go to the hospital - I had an endoscopy, to which I have still not heard the results.  A rheumatologist/internal med specialist was there that day and drained my ankles and injected cortisone which did help substantially - he wanted to put me on Prednisone and I was so very reluctant of the toxicity but I succumbed and have been on it - 20 mg to start, down to 2.5 and then back up to 5 mg and now up to 10 and will see this gentleman tomorrow for follow-up.  My husband I have bought a juicer and are starting to have healthy juice drinks and although I have not yet been on the elimination diet (I feel I should wait until I finish up the Prednisone) I have every intention of doing so - the cost of the ALCAT test seems rather over the top for me right now financially but I hope to get a food sensitivity test done by a naturopath soon. Anyway, I'm so happy I was blessed to find Barbara's book because it has given me hope.
Thank you Barbara Smiley

Hi Claudia,

I'm sorry to read what an ordeal you have been through.  Make sure if you get a food sensitivity test through a naturopath that whatever is used will really give you the info you need to get well.  Antibody tests (IgG, IgE, or sometimes called Eliza) don't have nearly as much clinical relevant to chronic inflammatory conditions such as ReA and RA.  They might help you get a little better, but they generally will not give you a complete turn around.  Even through it is expensive, that is why I recommend the ALCAT test.  It is testing for the exact right types of adverse food reactions.  It give you the exact info you need to get well.  Usually antibody tests miss some important inflammatory reactions not mediated by antibodies and indicate that some foods are problems, when the issue is past exposure, not current reactivity.
